Your guide to understanding video surveillance for business;

This guide will get you caught up on all the security technology terms and answer some of our customer’s most frequently asked questions.

What is video surveillance?

Video surveillance is when cameras are used to remotely view a protected area. These systems can be used indoors or outdoors, and are linked to a communication network. Video surveillance has capabilities depending on the cameras installed and their programming, some features include; high-definition cameras, tracking, movement controls like point, tilt and zoom capabilities. Learn more about Point Tilt Zoom cameras here.

What is remote guarding?

What is Remote Guarding?

Remote guarding utilizes analytics in cameras (often with CCTV systems) to first identify a potential threat, then sending a signal to a central monitoring station like the Radius Security Command Center. From there a series of trained security agents will track and verify the event as a threat. At that point the security agents will use built-in Suspicious Behavior Alerts (link to SBA Page), alarms, sirens to communicate to the threat. Another option for security agents is to report the incident to local authorities, as live crimes in-progress typically result in a fast police response. Learn more about why our customers have experienced more success with Human Detection Technology over basic remote guarding systems.

Why Would I Need Remote Guarding?

This intelligent video surveillance system lends itself to a broad range of uses, beyond even what a live security patrol can do. Some key applications include:

Prevent theft of high-value assets: some of the most common theft problems include; copper wiring, computer equipment from site offices, tools, machinery, catalytic converters, tires, rims and license plates.
Stop Vandalism: stop graffiti and other equipment damage.
Loitering: Warn loiterers directly via two-way audio feed.
Remote Management: Check-in on your business from any internet-capable device.Secure area monitoring: Construction sites, outdoor storage lots, heavy machinery, cannabis production facilities, etc.
Perimeter intrusion: Stop intruders in their tracks – before they do any damage. Most notably, our customers have prevented crane climbers on their construction sites.

What is video monitoring?

Video monitoring means that there is someone – or proprietary video analytics (link to #10)  – watching the camera feeds 24/7. With DIY camera systems or camera installation companies, sometimes the monitoring responsibility falls on the business owners. Read more about self-monitored camera systems here.

What is CCTV?

Traditionally, closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitors and cameras form the core of most video surveillance systems. The term refers to a system of arranging security cameras (in a closed circuit), rather than a specific type of camera. In fact, CCTV systems encompass a wide range of cameras

Analog CCTV security systems record footage for later review, while digital CCTV video footage can be stored and viewed via the Internet. Video stored on a VCR, DVR or hard drive must be compressed to save space, resulting in blurry, low-resolution images. IP or network security cameras store footage on an embedded server, which processes slightly higher-quality images.

While CCTV has a variety of applications, not all CCTV cameras are ideal for outside monitoring. Some don’t have the flexibility of different focal lengths and performance under different lighting conditions. More sophisticated cameras have adjustable iris lenses, pan/tilt/zoom capability and can be operated remotely.

Going a step further, Radius’ Redhanded™ remote guarding system uses Human Detection Technology™ to analyze and track input from these more sophisticated cameras. Unlike traditional CCTV video surveillance systems, Redhanded™ does not rely on human guards to monitor video feeds 24/7.

As an alternative to a 24/7 security video feed with video analytics, you may opt for a camera that only generates video clips when the camera detects an intruder. Or, combine these tools to suit your needs.

Thanks to dramatic advancements in security technology, your business security camera systems can be as straightforward or as sophisticated as your business demands and your budget allows.

What is the difference between a monitored security system and a self-monitored security system?

With a self-monitored security system, you as the business owner or project manager must be ready to respond to any camera triggers and determine your response. Compared to a monitored security system which would rely on a central monitoring station like the Radius Security Command Center to determine the severity of the threat and respond according to your predetermined procedures. By using a Command Center, you can help build safer communities by establishing a coordinated police response to a crime, catching criminals in the act. How can I use my security cameras as a remote property monitoring system?

Some of our customers, especially in the construction industry have used their security system to monitor their property remotely. Most notably increasing during the recent COVID-19 pandemic project managers like you, wanted a way to track progress on their job sites while they maintained their distance. This also allows for remotely checking in on employee progress, or even double-checking to make sure you turned off the lights. In this example, Paul wanted to save money on his security budget and do more with his security system – see what happened in this 2-minute video.

How is human detection different from motion detection?

Motion detection systems continuously analyze the environment in view to determine any changes. If there was any change in the environment, then the camera would send a trigger. Sometimes motion detection can filter out changes that don’t meet certain criteria such as the number of pixels which would translate to the size of the object moving in front of the camera. This is effective in some cases when you have pets within a home, and only want to have your cameras trigger on human-sized objects.

Human Detection is a proprietary combination of CCTV and real-time crime verification & reporting. This system compares incoming video to a massive memory bank of objects – only triggering the camera once there is a potential match. Taking it one step further, the Human Detection system also verifies a live crime is in progress and reports to the police, also sending the footage to responding officers.

Why is remote guarding recommended for logistics?

Remote guarding gives you the most control over your outdoor property. As a combination of CCTV cameras, analytics and a central monitoring station – these systems can replace security guards on any site and improve your coverage. Unfortunately, static guards or guard patrols cannot cover 100% of your property at once. This is where Remote Guarding can give the logistics industry remote property management capabilities, remote gate access control as well as full perimeter protection, chokepoint control and specific asset protection. Most people that switch from guards to remote guarding like Redhanded Human Detection Technology also save 40% on their security budgets. Learn more about the real cost of Security here.

What is the difference between security camera analytics and security camera artificial intelligence?

Security camera analytics continuously compare incoming video to a memory bank of over 50,000 images to determine whether or not to trigger, whereas advances in artificial intelligence for security would mean the system is able to actually learn and adjust its triggers autonomously. Many even in the security industry get these phrases confused, so it’s important to understand the difference in order to feel in full control of your system. What is perimeter protection?

Perimeter protection is part of a well-rounded security solution. It involves protecting specifically the perimeter around an area to determine any breaches by trespassers. Perimeter protection must have three things;

A gate or fence surrounding the perimeter that is high enough to be able to prevent persons from jumping over it. It is best if there are construction blockers to deter possible criminals from seeing valuable items inside.

Remote Guarding – of course!

CCTV or security cameras alone won’t stop crime on site, which is why a remote guarding solution like Redhanded Human Detection Technology is important to catch live events as they are happening. Crimes in progress get a better response time by police which is why Redhanded is revolutionizing the relationships between security technology companies and local policing agencies.

Adequate signage.

Ontario police issued a notice in 2019 that required “no trespassing signage” in order for them to dispatch on any events on the property. Learn more about our blockers program to ensure you not only deter possible criminals, but you also meet local requirements for dispatching to your property when needed.

What are PTZ Cameras?

PTZ Cameras get their name from their point, tilt and zoom capabilities. These security cameras are able to point in any direction, tilt when needed and zoom in to potential trespassers, or licence plates. They allow security agents to track persons on the property to determine whether or not they’re a threat to your assets. Especially on auto malls that typically have their inventory on display, without a fenced perimeter.

What is Real-Time Crime Verification?

Real-time crime verification is the process our Command Center Operators or security agents use to determine whether or not there is a threat to your property based on a triggered camera event. Camera analytics send clips of footage to the North American Command Center, which are then classified by a trained security operator. Some classifications examples include; person seen – no threat, authorized person on-site, or suspicious person seen – police dispatched. Our Redhanded solution verifies crimes in progress and reports to local law enforcement. Our customers have played a major role in decreasing crime in local communities by their commitment to catching criminals in the act. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can eliminate crime on outdoor properties; such as auto dealerships and construction sites, check out our Redhanded Human Detection Technology.

What is access control?

Every business employs some form of access control. You want to control who goes where and when on your premises. Access control also allows you to track time and attendance. It could be mechanical locks on your windows and doors, an electronic card reader, or biometrics that verify your credentials on-site. You can install a basic card reader into a parking garage, or an enterprise system across several locations.
